Craniotomies to remove blood clots from within and around the brains of head injured patients are the basic training staple of neurosurgery residents at large urban medical centers. They are important in learning neurosurgery because the principles that underlie safe, efficient head trauma operations are the same that underlie more complex (and to most neurosurgeons, challenging and rewarding) intra- and extracranial surgery.
In most American hospitals, medical personnel in addition to neurosurgery residents participate in the care of head injured patients. In some foreign countries (and American counties) non-neurosurgeons handle all aspects of head trauma management, including evacuation of intracranial hematomas. |
