Every surgery no matter how small carries the risk of complications.

An untoward physiologic, neurologic, or cosmetic event following an emergency craniotomy is a "Complication".

After a craniotomy for severe head injury it may be impossible to distinguish between the untoward effects of trauma and those of surgery.

The most common complications following emergency craniotomy are:

Recurrent hematoma

Infection (brain abscess)

Infection (meningitis)

Infection (bone flap)

Stroke
