Carotid artery

External carotid - middle meningeal - Internal carotid - Extracranial - Skull base - Intrcranial - Carotid circulation - ophthalmic - posterior communicating - anterior communicating - middle cerebral

The carotid artery begins in the base of the neck as the common carotid artery.

About half way up the neck the common carotid branches into the Internal carotid and External carotid arteries.

External carotid artery

The neurosurgically significant branches of the external carotid artery are the:

     Middle meningeal artery

The middle meningeal artery enters the cranium through the foramen spinosum.  It runs in the dura mater of the middle fossa that covers the temporal lobe.  Tearing of the middle meningeal artery (most commonly by a fracture of the temporal bone of the skull) results in formation of an epidural hematoma.

Carotid Circulation

The blood flow to the brain comes from either the carotid or vertebral arteries.  The "carotid circulation" includes all the branches of the internal carotid artery that supply the brain.

      Ophthalmic artery

      Posterior communicating artery

      Choroidal artery

     Anterior communicating artery

     Middle cerebral artery

The middle cerebral artery supplies the outer part of both cerebral hemispheres.  It is
