Radiosurgery - Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion
Perfexion Suite — UC University Hospital: The most advanced Gamma Knife in Los Angeles and Southern California
The Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion — the latest and most advanced Gamma Knife technology — is now available at USC University Hospital. Redesigned from the ground up in 2007, the Perfexion offers advances in precision, dosemetry and patient comfort.
True to the goals of its inventor, Professor Lars Leksell, known as the father of radiosurgery — and consistent with USC University Hospital’s stereotactic radiosurgery leadership position — the Perfexion refines treatment of brain tumors to the highest level, making it safer and faster and providing unmatched accuracy.
The USC University Hospital program combines the Perfexion’s innovative technology with a team of distinguished and experienced physicians and physicists, headed by Dr. Michael L.J. Apuzzo, Director of the Gamma Knife Unit. An internationally recognized neurological surgeon, Dr. Apuzzo is a pioneer in imaging-directed stereotactic radiosurgery.
USC’s long history with stereotactic radiosurgery began in 1985 with treatment of the first patient in the western U.S., continued with the introduction of Gamma Knife radiosurgery in 1993, and culminates today with the Perfexion’sintroduction.
The Gamma Knife Perfexion features a completely new design that takes stereotactic radiosurgery to the next level and provides a radiosurgical platform for further refinement and expansion of procedures in the brain, cervical spine and head and neck regions.
The Perfexion features advanced patient treatment and safety controls, including a fully automated dose delivery system. Additionally, it can treat more tumors in a comparable time period than other radiosurgical devices — without sacrificing precision.
The sophisticated Perfexion system allows Gamma Knife centers to treat previously unreachable tumors, including more laterally located cranial tumors and certain cervical spine and head and neck tumors.
By making this state-of-the-art system available, USC University Hospital is providing the same opportunity for clinically effective treatment that more than 500,000 patients have experienced worldwide.
Conditions Treatable with Gamma Knife Perfexion
- Metastatic brain tumors
- Single
- Multiple
- Malignant brain tumors
- Benign brain tumors
- Meningiomas
- Acoustic neuromas
- Pituitary adenomas
- Vascular malformations
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Paranasal sinus lesions
- Orbits and certain upper cervical lesions
The Perfexion enhances the proven benefits of the Gamma Knife platform, offering:
- Improved radiation delivery to targets
- Greater comfort
- Much faster treatment time
- Reduced radiation exposure
In addition to benefiting from the Perfexion, USC University Hospital patients have the comfort of knowing they have an outstanding team of professionals to work with. The USC University Hospital team, with its extensive clinical experience diagnosing and treating structural brain lesions, uses MRI, CT, PET scans and angiography to determine if a lesion is appropriate for Gamma Knife radiosurgery.
The team includes neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, physicists, neuroradiologists, and neuroanesthesiologists, who collectively review cases to determine applicability of Gamma Knife treatment, then apply their considerable skills to treating selected patients.
The USC University Hospital program integrates advanced technology with an experienced team of professionals. Contact Mairead Rusch, RN (323)442-8860 for more information.
