The USC Department of Neurosurgical Surgery values research and academic endeavors as a top priority.  Our department is committed to support innovative basic science and clinical research that may lead to ground-breaking therapies for our patients in the future.  Our research mission is supported with both NIH and private research funding.

The spine division in the USC department of neurological surgery is particularly committed to support research in the area of spine oncology, spinal cord injury, and minimally invasive spine surgery.  Dr. Stefan Lee leads our basic science research operation in conjunction with the USC spine faculty at the USC Keck School of Medicine campus.  Ongoing research projects in our spine division include stem-cell therapy for spinal cord injury, animal modeling of chordomas and metastatic spine tumors, and cytogenetic characterization of chordoma cell lines.  In addition, we are actively conducting research on the development of novel minimally invasive surgical strategies for treatment of metastatic spine tumors.

Funded research opportunities within the USC neurosurgery spine division are available for both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral candidates.  Fellowship period may range from 3 months to 3 years, depending on the individual’s qualification and the capacity of the laboratory.  Those who are interested in applying for the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral research fellowship should contact us at:
